Known as “The Beast of the East,” #1309 is a large and unique 2-6-6-2 locomotive. Built in 1949, it is the last locomotive that the Baldwin Locomotive Works ever made before being bought up. On November 21, 2025, some friends and I traveled to Cumberland, Maryland to see and ride “the beast” as the Polar Express. This image was captured along the section of track rooted in the area known as the Narrows, due to the high mountain cliffs on either side of Wills Creek below.
