In one of the large Virginia snows when I was a VMI cadet, I went out around post to photograph the snow. When walking away from barracks, I past another student. I turned around after he walked by and snapped this picture. The freshmen students at VMI are known as “rats.” This phrase was coined by Washington & Lee students (the college immediately adjacent to VMI) by them witnessing the all grey color of our uniforms. Though this phrase was coined decades ago, the term “rat” is still used today and is a treasured part of the VMI experience. So, hence the name: “Rat in the Snow.”
